"Photography is an archeological search... a search which can allow us a glimpse beyond the obvious... a subliminal flash of the illusive, the intangible, the fleeting."
Will Scott (American, 1967) began pursuing photography in his youth after his father constructed a small darkroom in their home. The mystery of the darkroom was endlessly intriguing and activities surrounding it were fascinating to a curious boy. Later, the desire to explore his environment was kindled and enhanced by his family's continuing travels to Ireland (the country of his parent's birth). These trips heightened his awareness of the abiding power of place and left Scott with a keen sense of the unknown.
These formative experiences began to focus in high school and finally manifested in the completion of a BA in Art (Photography). After graduation, Scott relocated to San Francisco where he would further perfect his darkroom skills by working as the first photographic printer (1994-1998) to Michael Kenna and also working for renowned photographer, Ruth Bernhard and others.
Today William Scott is a master printer who creates his mysterious and poetic images in editions of ninety. Each of his meticulously handcrafted and split toned photographs is the culmination of nearly thirty years of dedication to the discipline of classiclal wet darkroom printing.
In the most recent decade, William Scott has relocated to the rugged Northern California coast where he continues to photograph the collision between land and sea as he extends his search for insight and meaning.
